GRANDE OAKBRIDGE MONTESSORI CURRICULUM

The core curriculum at pre-school level is the Montessori curriculum. In school, children work with Montessori materials and other educational resources which helps stir their interest for learning and enhances ability on how to think, communicate, behave responsibly and become independent beyond the walls of the school.

Through the use of these materials, the basic skills for – language and literacy, mathematics, knowledge and understanding of the world, creative development, personal and social skills including physical education development – are achieved in Primary school.

Children in our primary school are treated with trust and respect. They are encouraged to work out their own relationships in school, beyond the education sphere and also to appreciate their environment by taking care of and learning to respect their natural world. The children are thus prepared to make a smooth transition at various learning levels, that is, infant (toddler) school to nursery then to elementary school and beyond with increasing use of instructional materials that aid effective learning.

PRACTICAL LIFE

The exercises carried out in this subject afford and provide the children at Grande Oakbridge Montessori with opportunities to imitate adults at home or outside the school as they carry out daily tasks that adults consider ordinary e.g. washing, dressing – up, polishing shoes, etc. By carrying out these activities, children perfect their coordination skill, concentration skill, effectiveness and efficiency when engaged with tasks in school and at home and observation skill. These exercises also help to develop children’s social awareness, social skills and cognitive skills. Above all, the children gradually learn to work independently of the adult right from primary school.

SENSORIAL EXERCISES

Sensorial materials help children to distinguish, categorize and use their senses to build good knowledge and understanding of their world. The child’s senses become sharpened thereby permitting him/her to form new concepts through experience derived from executing various exercises in this subject. Sensorial exercises help to lay a proper foundation for the understanding of subjects like mathematics, geometry and scientific skills in future.

MATHEMATICS

The Montessori math materials help the child assimilate mathematical skills and facts seamlessly. They help the child gradually move towards abstraction of mathematical concepts and take the drudgery and drill out of mathematical work. The children use the graded materials to carry out sample operations under addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in school.

LITERACY

Literacy skills which involve listening, speaking, reading and writing will be introduced to the child at an early stage. Reading is approached using the phonetic sounds of letters first. This way the child is given the key to decoding words that he/she comes across even for the first time. Sounds are introduced using the sandpaper letters. This is encouraged in our nursery and primary school here at Grande Oakbridge Montessori school.
Thereafter, the child is introduced to alphabet names in sequence. Reading readiness is taken into consideration in introducing the child to reading in school and the child gradually moves from learning simple words to complex words at his own pace. Exciting games and activities are used to sustain the child’s interest and make reading enjoyable throughout the period of learning in school. Initial introduction to writing is executed through the child performing a number of purposefully structured activities which help to prepare him directly and indirectly at school and home for writing. By listening to other children talk, the child develops freedom to express his ideas and confidence to speak and construct sentences in an articulate manner, even beyond the school walls.

CULTURAL

Cultural study is a combination of Geography – (the world and its inhabitants), History – (Natural Evolution and Concept of Time), Botany – (Study of plants), Zoology – (Study of Animals), and Science – (Animate and Inanimate Sciences)

The child learns about faraway lands and continents in Geography beginning with their continent, using the globes and puzzle maps. The child gradually moves from learning about continents in school to exploring the different countries, climates and common land and water formations.
Plants and animals are also studied beginning with simple pairing exercises. The child thereafter progresses to learning about Plant and Animal Kingdom, and the interdependence of living things on each other. Through these activities, the child learns about the real world – (the natural and man – made environment) exploring countries, foods, customs, music and climate.

Numeracy: Mental mathematics, Quantitative reasoning, Number theory, Algebra, Statistics, Geometry and Arithmetic.
Literacy: Grammar, Comprehension, Spelling, Reading/phonics, Handwriting, Creative writing, Poetry and verbal reasoning.
Science: Science and ICT
Humanities: History, Geography and Citizenship
Christian Religious Knowledge
